The World on Your Plate: A Celebration of Global Flavors

Every four years, the world gathers for the FIFA World Cup, a monumental occasion where nations unite over a shared love of the game. Beyond the pitch, the World Cup celebrates something even more enduring: the cultures, traditions, and flavors that make each nation unique. It reminds us that what brings people together—across language, distance, and difference—often starts at the table.

This June, we are bringing the world to your plate with dishes spanning from the street corners of Mexico City to the markets of Marrakech, the trattorias of Italy to the bustling food stalls of Seoul. We are celebrating the dishes that fans, families, and friends gather around in every corner of the globe.

We’ll start on the vibrant streets of North America and carry you through to the bustling markets of Asia, North Africa, and beyond:

North America

Mexico – World Cup Street Tacos: Born on the streets of Mexico City, tacos are a centuries-old tradition rooted in Indigenous nixtamal corn preparation, layered with marinated meats and bright salsas. They remain a cornerstone of global street food culture today.

Canada – Poutine: A late-night Québécois classic of crisp fries, fresh cheese curds, and rich gravy. It’s a comfort food that has become a national icon.

Jamaica – Callaloo refers to both a leafy green and the signature Caribbean dish made from it. Simmered with onions, garlic, and coconut milk, this nutrient-rich staple is a celebrated culinary icon across Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

South America

Argentina — Bondipan: A beloved street sandwich is famously enjoyed by fans gathering outside football stadiums across Buenos Aires. Bondipan pairs juicy grilled pork with chimichurri, reflecting Argentina’s love of fire-cooked meats.

Panama — Spicy Beef Empanadas: Flaky hand pies filled with seasoned beef. Empanadas are a Latin American staple shaped by Spanish colonial influence and perfected across generations.

Europe

Italy – Paisano Piadini: Pepperoni, basil pesto, and arugula folded inside a grilled flatbread. The piadina dates back centuries to the Romagna region, originally cooked on terracotta tiles as a rustic, nourishing staple.

Spain – Calamares a la Romana Sandwich: Crispy fried calamari on a fresh baguette, brightened with a vibrant cilantro mojo sauce. Influenced by coastal fishing communities, fried seafood is a celebrated tradition in Spanish tapas culture.

Germany – Currywurst: Sliced bratwurst topped with a spiced curry ketchup. Born in post-WWII Berlin out of a resource-sharing trade between a local resident and British soldiers, it is now Germany’s definitive, iconic street food.

Africa

Morocco – Ras El Hanout Chicken Skewers: Grilled chicken infused with Ras El Hanout, a complex “top of the shop” Moroccan spice blend, served with warm pita, garlic toum sauce, and spicy shatta.

Asia

South Korea – Tteokbokki: Chewy rice cakes simmered in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce. Originally a savory, soy-based dish in the ancient royal courts, it evolved into its modern, fiery red form in the mid-20th century.

Japan – Okonomiyaki: A savory Japanese egg and cabbage fritter topped with crispy pork, hoisin sauce, and a drizzle of sriracha mayo. Translating to “how you like” (okonomi) and “grilled” (yaki), it gained massive popularity in Japan after WWII as a hearty, customizable meal.
